On March 7, 2025, the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro, VA, had the honor of hosting the Virginia State Finals of Poetry Out Loud, a national arts education program that encourages high school students to engage with poetry through memorization and performance. This year’s competition brought together eight exceptionally talented students from across the Commonwealth, each demonstrating a profound passion for poetry and the power of the spoken word.

As the competition unfolded, the audience was captivated not only by the students’ precise and confident recitations but also by the emotional depth and vulnerability each performer brought to the stage. Their words resonated beyond the verses they recited—creating an atmosphere of both artistic expression and personal connection.

Beyond the competition itself, a remarkable camaraderie emerged among the students. Though they arrived as individual competitors, they quickly formed a close-knit community, supporting and encouraging one another. The spirit of Poetry Out Loud transcended the contest, transforming it into an experience of shared artistry and mutual respect.

An Inside Look with Corey Holmes

We had the opportunity to speak with Corey Holmes, Director of Education at the Wayne Theatre and Virginia’s State Chair for Poetry Out Loud, about the impact of the program and its future.

What makes Poetry Out Loud so special to you?

"The more I learned about Poetry Out Loud, the more I fell in love with it. With my background in Shakespearean acting and a master's degree in literature, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the spoken word, text analysis, and performance. This program combines all of those elements, and I also get to work with high school students, which I love. Hosting it here at the Wayne Theatre is such a privilege. What’s even more exciting is that I can connect these students to other poetry events, helping them gain more exposure and build their resumes.”

What have been some of your most memorable moments from Poetry Out Loud?

"First of all, I will never receive more polite emails than the ones I get from these students. Their communication is always so thoughtful and eloquent, which speaks not only to their character but also to the incredible coaching they receive at their schools. One moment that really stood out to me was when a student who qualified for the finals had to withdraw. Instead of focusing on her disappointment, she sent me an email saying how much comfort it gave her to know that the runner-up would have the opportunity to compete in her place. That level of empathy and mindfulness is truly inspiring, and it’s one of the many reasons I love this program.”

Looking Ahead

While Poetry Out Loud is a competition, it is also a platform for students to express vulnerability, build confidence, and cultivate a sense of community. It is a celebration of both literature and character—where thoughtfulness and artistry go hand in hand.

For those who missed this year’s event, don’t worry—Poetry Out Loud will return to the Wayne Theatre in 2026. This is an experience not to be missed. When the time comes, be sure to witness these extraordinary students bring poetry to life. Their performances are sure to leave you inspired.
