The Wayne Theatre  is thrilled to announce the first musical of our 2024-2025  “Live, Laugh, Loathe” Season:
Nickelodeon’s The Spongebob Musical

AUDITION DETAILS
We are accepting OPEN in-person auditions for ALL ROLES. Ages 8+Diversity is one of the main themes of The SpongeBob Musical. As such, we’re looking to find and celebrate diversity in body type, race, gender, age, and ability. That’s what an ocean habitat looks like, that’s how our world is, and that’s the Bikini Bottom way! That being said, performers must be 8+ at the time of the beginning of rehearsals. Youth Performers: See Below! 

Audition Date/Time
Saturday, May 11 from 1-5 p.m.
in-person on the MainStage at the Wayne Theatre. 
1-2 p.m. for performers 15 and under (one song)
2-3:30 p.m. Music Portion for performers over 15 (2 contrasting)
3:30-5 p.m. Dance Portion *all performers over 15 will be called to the Dance/Movement Portion
For the movement call: please wear/bring clothing and shoes that you can move in.

TO AUDITION:
 
Please fill out this SpongeBob Audition Form before or on the day of auditions. You will be given a place to submit your resume and headshot, as well as a place to sign up for a specific time slot.

For those performers age 15 and under, please follow the following guidelines:
Please prepare ONE song in the style of the show (16-32 bars each).
Please do not use a song from the show.
Bring your own accompaniment track on your device, we will provide a Bluetooth speaker, apple dongle or aux cable for you to connect to.
No further movement audition is required.

For those performers over the age of 15, please follow the following guidelines:
Please prepare TWO CONTRASTING songs in the style of the show (16-32 bars each).
Please do not use a song from the show.
Bring your own accompaniment track on your device, we will provide a Bluetooth speaker, apple dongle or aux cable for you to connect to. The first part of the audition will consist of the vocal audition at your chosen time slot.
For the second half, please be prepared to move.
You will be doing approximately 3 counts of 8 of basic movement.
For accessibility purposes, those who register to audition will receive the dance audition via email the week before. 

Callbacks 
Callbacks will be held on Monday, May 13th from 7-10pm. 
Actors will be notified via email if they are called back. 
NOT everyone will receive a callback.
We are not calling back for every role so not receiving a callback does not mean you have not been cast. 
If you are offered a callback, you will be required to learn a musical excerpt from the show.

Cast List Announced:
Actors will be notified via email if they do or do not receive a role in the production. 
Those emails will be sent out the week of May 13th. 

Rehearsal Dates:
Rehearsals will begin Monday, 5/19.
Rehearsals will be Su/M/W/Th from 7-10pm 
***On most nights, the artistic team will prioritize releasing performers under the age of 16 by 8:45pm. Some exceptions based on the role or rehearsal (tech) may occur.Tech Rehearsals will be the week prior to opening. No conflicts accepted during Tech Week or Performances.

Tech Week:
The week before opening, performers should plan on being present at all tech rehearsals. Every effort will be made to minimize rehearsals going over time. Flexibility is appreciated. The artistic staff reserve the right to make adjustments to the tech schedule based on the needs of the production and the venue restrictions.

A Note About Youth Performers
The Wayne strives to create a safe and structured environment for young performers. 
We will engage the following measures to ensure the safety of children throughout the rehearsal and performance process:
We will employ a Youth Associate Director to act as a safety and creative liaison between youth performers, their families, and the creative team.
All dressing areas will be monitored and separated by age.

We will be thoughtful about the length of the rehearsal day for youth performers.

SHOW SYNOPSIS
Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show!
When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt.

The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

The Wayne is looking for playful and collaborative artists! We strongly encourage LGBTQ and BIPOC actors to audition! 

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS
C2 - B4
Everyone’s favorite yellow sponge, and the hero of our story. Bright, cheery, and always optimistic, SpongeBob knows how to maintain a positive attitude, even when a deadly volcano threatens to destroy his
beloved town.

SQUIDWARD Q. TENTACLES
A2 - F#4
SpongeBob and Patrick’s cranky, clarinet- playing neighbor. He has a very gloomy outlook on life, believing the world’s “a horrible place filled with fear, suffering, and despair”, but nonetheless, he dreams of becoming a famous stage star for the sake of his late mother, and is willing to do just about anything to achieve his big break.

EUGENE H. KRABS
B2 - Bb4
The greedy owner of the Krusty Krab, and employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. While everyone is off panicking about Bikini Bottom’s imminent doom, he decides to strike the iron while it’s hot and puts on a huge “apocalypse sale” at his restaurant, exploiting the fear of his fellow fish to make him even richer.

SHELDON J. PLANKTON
B2 - G#4
The scheming owner of the Chum Bucket who has big plans for world domination. He uses the Mount Humongous disaster to his advantage by convincing everyone to leave Bikini Bottom and settle into a new town, where he’ll tyrannically take them over as their new Evil Overlord. But they don’t know that, of course.

PATCHY THE PIRATE
D3 - F4 (F5 Falsetto)
The pirate president of the SpongeBob fan club. Eager to see his idol star in his very own Broadway musical, Patchy sets up his own little VIP seat right in front of the stage, before getting booted out by security guards. He constantly tries sneaking his way back into the theater throughout the majority of the show.

PATRICK STAR
Bb2 - Bb4
Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless, an innocent; a big softie, who can also be prone to sudden child-like fits of rage or frustration

SANDY CHEEKS
G3 - E5
A brainy and athletic Texan squirrel who came to Bikini Bottom for a research project. She acts as SpongeBob’s most trusted ally on their quest to stop the volcano from erupting, using her vast amount of scientific knowledge and brilliant inventions to aid the mission.

PEARL KRABS
Bb3 - F#5
Mr. Krabs’ teenage whale daughter. Even though her father spoils her silly, she deeply detests his greed and wants him to prioritize his family, not his profits. She’s also a huge fan of the famous rock band the Electric Skates, and eventually plans to run away with them after she’s had enough of her dad’s neglect.

KAREN THE COMPUTER
G#3 - F#5
A waterproof supercomputer who is Plankton’s snarky sidekick and wife. She aids her husband in his plot to take everything over after realizing that his Evil Plan is putting the spark back into their relationship.

PERCH PERKINS
E2 - E4
The head anchor of Bikini Bottom News. He keeps everyone up-to-date on the current state of their doomed hometown. Has a booming bass voice and progressively becomes more and more frazzled.

MAYOR OF BIKINI BOTTOM
The overbearing mayor of Bikini Bottom. She claims that everything is under control as the apocalypse draws nearer, but it’s pretty clear that she has absolutely no idea what to do... so she decides to become a dictator.

LARRY THE LOBSTER
A muscular lobster who spends most of his time “getting his claws swole”. He eventually becomes the Mayor’s bodyguard.

THE ELECTRIC SKATES (x3)
A famous rock band who’s hired to perform at the Bikini Bottom benefit concert. Pearl’s a huge fan of these guys. They’re known to rock out while zipping across the stage on skateboards and roller skates, hence the name.

The Conductor-who hands off an receives a whole slew of props 

The Foley Artist Fish - a staged role that produces all sound effects specified in the script and score using percussion instruments, triggered digital effects, and other creative sound makers. The show is meant to be performed with a Foley Artist Fish playing sound effects live, and within view of the audience to accompany the stage action. 

MRS. PUFF
SpongeBob’s teacher at Boating School, an underwater school where students learn to drive boats like cars. She and SpongeBob are on an endless quest to get him a driver’s license, but due to his unintentional recklessness behind the wheel, they are never successful.

OLD MAN JENKINS
A cranky old fish who leads an Angry Mob against Sandy for being a land creature.

Playing a variety of roles with many speaking and singing solos. Roles include, but not limited to:
