The Rush Started Here: Gold Mining in the Southeastern US 1800-1849
Dr. Michael S. Smith, University of North Carolina Wilmington and Virginia Geological Survey
Dr. Michael S. Smith earned his PhD in Geochemistry and Petrology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and his B.S. Geology/ B.S. Chemistry at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. He has over 30 years of experience in teaching mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry to both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Montana State University, and Colorado State University. His research areas have ranged from Archaean to Proterozoic metamorphic petrology and geochemistry in Greenland, Canada, and the western United States, economic geology of emerald and tourmaline mineralization in western North Carolina, deciphering the geochemical signature of the Catoctin Fm. greenstones in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, volcanic (basaltic) evolution of the early Yellowstone caldera (2.1 Ma), as well as various topics in the history of science genre. He has produced over 30 peer reviewed journal articles and numerous abstracts and professional reports. Since retirement, he has been working with the Virginia Geological Survey (Charlottesville) as a mineralogist, petrologist, and geochemist assisting with the geological investigation of Virginia.
