Beth Otto, mother of student actor Will Otto, shared her perspective on the Wayne Theatre’s new College Prep Program and how it helped her family navigate the complex application process for performing arts schools.
“As someone who enjoys the arts but isn’t familiar with the field professionally, it was intimidating when Will expressed interest in studying musical theatre,” Beth said. “We really didn’t know much at all.”
She explained how overwhelming it was to research schools, understand application requirements, and support Will in preparing audition materials. “It was a lot,” she admitted. “So, to have a local resource we could trust -- to tap into their knowledge and help him get to where he wants to be -- was everything.”
Beth especially appreciated how the program provided a personalized spreadsheet outlining application requirements for each school. “It was huge,” she said. “All the schools have different criteria and due dates. Some required in-person auditions, others accepted virtual submissions. Keeping track of it all without that spreadsheet would have been impossible.”
She described how the staff at the Wayne Theatre supported Will through both the artistic and administrative aspects of the application process. From selecting audition pieces to reviewing videos and organizing timelines, the program provided the structure they needed. “Most schools require you to apply academically first, then artistically. And every school does it a little differently,” she explained. “Having someone who understands that and can help you navigate it makes all the difference.”
Beth said she saw clear growth in Will’s performance skills during his time in the program, especially in his stage presence and movement. “Just watching his growth, especially in his physicality on stage, has been incredible.”
When asked if she would recommend the program to other parents, she replied, “I honestly don’t know how we would have done this without it. It’s been a phenomenal support system. I highly recommend the College Prep Program.”
