Performances resume this weekend at the historic Wayne Theatre in downtown Waynesboro, Virginia for the closing weekend of RENT. To get an inside look at the production, Waynesboro-based marketing firm Standout Arts, LLC connected with cast member Kat McLean, who plays the role of Joanne Jefferson, to discuss what being part of this show has meant to her.
What has this experience in RENT meant to you?
"From day one, everybody in the cast, on the creative team, and behind the scenes has been fully committed. This show holds personal meaning for so many of us. Several cast members have shared their own connections to RENT, and it’s been powerful to create a new version of that story together. There’s a strong sense of community, and it’s especially meaningful to be doing this in a smaller town with such great local support."
What do you want people to take away from this?
"There’s a major theme of living in the moment. In the show, we sing 'No Day but Today,' and even through the rehearsal process, it has felt like everything is flying by. That idea of taking in every moment really resonates. The show includes some incredibly tragic moments, where time feels like it stops. I hope the audience walks away with a reminder to be present, to appreciate the moment, because tomorrow is never guaranteed. Another takeaway is the importance of withholding judgment. We try to apply that not only to the characters we play, but also to each other. I hope the audience brings that message home with them."
Did you know any of the cast before this production?
"I'm a Wayne veteran. I’ve been doing shows here since 2015. One of the best parts of this production is the new people we’ve welcomed into the theatre community. Every show builds our sense of connection, but because this one focuses so deeply on the theme of community, it feels especially meaningful. One moment that illustrates this beautifully is when the entire cast comes together on stage during a moment of deep grief for one of the characters. As he sings about his loss, we are there to support him. That moment really embodies what RENT is about...showing up for one another and taking care of each other."
