The Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro, VA is excited about the launch of a new College Prep Program for students applying to performing arts colleges and universities. Actor Will Otto, who recently completed the program, shared how the experience helped him earn acceptances to 12 of the 30 schools to which he applied.
Will explained that his preparation started even before the formal program began. After attending a summer intensive at Ithaca College, he began working with Studio Wayne educators Corey Holmes and Lesley Larsen to build his skills in dance and acting. Entering the fall with this foundation gave him a head start.
According to Will, “A lot of the application process for performing arts schools starts earlier than when you’re applying for academic programs.” He credits the Wayne Theatre’s College Prep Program with providing essential guidance through this demanding process. “Lesley and Corey helped me with that process quite a lot, and that part of this program is huge.”
Will emphasized that the program supported every aspect of the application journey, from selecting material and submitting audition tapes to traveling for in-person auditions. The skills he gained were not limited to performance but extended to professional preparation and organization.
The program was also tailored to his individual needs. Will noted, “I like to pride myself in that I’m a pretty good singer... so we focused on the other two aspects heavily. Corey worked with me on dance and Lesley on acting.” He was confident that if his strengths had been different, the program would have adjusted accordingly. “The beautiful thing about this is that it is so tailorable. This program really is made for anyone.”
Will’s mother, Beth Otto, added that the staff helped him choose monologues, songs, and choreography that best showcased his strengths. She stressed that these choices made a significant difference in how he presented himself to each school.
Asked why he would recommend the program, Will responded, “The people at the Wayne are some of the kindest, most open-hearted people you’re going to meet. It’s a very professional environment where you’re allowed to have fun and make mistakes.” He also noted the benefit of working with experienced professionals who offer honest feedback. “You’re working with people who are kind, trying to help you grow, and who are going to be honest with you because they know what they’re doing.”
